Posted July 28, 2006 at 02:39 PM I really hate how jazz and classical get a bad rep. Some of the most amazing music is that of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Eric Dolphy!! Also you gotta give props to Wagner, Shostakovic, and Stravinky. Listening to them is an intense and gratifying experience. |

Posted August 21, 2006 at 06:25 PM Hi guys, speaking of classical and jazz music. Combining these two becomes classical jazz and is really a killer to all musicians and singers when played correctly or sung correctly depends on the skill and ability of the person doing it. |

Posted August 09, 2006 at 11:11 PM Forgive me for saying this But that is kindof narrow minded. There are over 2000 langauges on this planet, over 400 different cultures, and several thousand genres of music, ..........and you pik only two????? From Medeival and Rennaisance to Tibetan Tuval Throat singing (three tone harmonics for one voice, a drone and two melodies, ....Let me hear an Opera singer try THAT), or microtonal music ,19 tone equal temperment, Parches 43rd, Let me see you pull off Ragamuffin by Micheal Hedges….... or Aerial Boudaries. hmmmm guess you never heard of him . [UNDERLINE]Classical Is Only 400 Years Old/UNDERLINEJazz Is Only 60 Years Old[/UNDERLINE] I am not saying that Jazz isnt hot, I play it!, but we are here I believe to EXPLORE ALL music , because it is the Basis of a Peoples Communication , or How they feel , each culture , each genre has a great deal to say to each one who is willing to lisen. |

Posted August 10, 2006 at 06:02 PM No malice intended. It was just a general statement. The Forum is called vent. I however have studied ethnomusicology. I do appreciate other types of music and consider myself a very open minded person. Jazz and Classical which i am using as a general term for baroque to are great stepping stones into ethnic music and the study of these genres I feel allow people in the western culture to appreciate other cultures music. I think it is important to explore all types of genres and cultures. Your comment is very true. The statement Id like to challenge is music is a communication, a way of how people feel. This is not necissarily true. There are many great examples. Through out time there have been people writing music to survive. Many time with out the intention of feeling. What really defines music? |

Posted August 11, 2006 at 04:44 AM When you play someone elses music, you play from their sheets or their Ideas. Therefore they HAVE communicated to you or thru you , when you write your own music , you are wiring it because you Have something to say , some feeling to express, some emotion or thought to capture That being said , music is an almost pure form of Communication. Challenge Accepted |

Posted September 08, 2006 at 06:23 AM HEHE HEHEH 3oo views so far on this , what a riot. , catagorizing music , has been one of music stores worst nightmares. So many musicians dropped in the ‘New Age ’ section when there is absolutely no connection with that genre. Just where does Neo Classical and Progressive Metal draw a boundary, Dream Theater is Prog Metal , But Symphony X is Somewere between Neo and Prog. Kansas, is Progressive Rock, But if you listen closely to either Dream theater, or Symphony X, You will hear Kansas`s influence , specifically the album Leftoverture. ( By the way Richard Williams the guitar player , Also has classical theory , and music theory squarely under his belt) Then there is that whole ‘Contemporary’ Genre. ‘Contemporary’Jazz.’Contemporary’Adult,’Contemporary’Blues, (What the hell is that ?) there is even a ‘Contemporary’Rock, come on …....geez. ‘New Emotional’ is another catagory that just gets me, since when are Emotions NEW? last I heard Samson got pretty messed up about his hairdo. Oh yeah , and Alexander wasnt passionate at all about his conquests, nope not at all…..... Get off the GENRE crap and PLAY something already, go to open mic night , or Jam sessions , and PLAY, Peace:D |

Posted August 11, 2006 at 02:33 PM Music is a language unto itself. Just as there are thousands of different spoken languages and dialects of each, so are there also different variations in music. The common thread among all is the ability for man to communicate ideas, and emotion. The same methods that provide our similarities with all other creatures also seperates use by our ability to convey music in a written form and combine it with language. When I am playing with other musicians its a ‘feeling’ of communication, not just the notes or lyrics but a shared place, space, time. Once you have found that special place and have that moment where the music just happens without reading or following notes its a feeling you cannot explain. Just like the first time you get up on a surf board and catch a wave. You cant help but smile. :D |

Posted August 22, 2006 at 11:14 AM So how about jazzy classical? Mozart would have been alot more free to express in todays musical world. Possibly combining classical and death metal as well. a classic death. He and Freddy Mercury could have mad a hell of a team! 8) |
