Bio:

My name is Donovan J. Hernandez. I am a freelance bassist and rhythm guitarist as well as an independent music instructor. I have played a total of 12 years on guitar and 8 years on bass. Throughout the years, I’ve grown a great deal of experience playing for funk/rock and indie rock bands as well as solo artists. Musically, I dig all types of rhythms and grooves, but, I specialize in putting the 'icing on the cake'... so to speak. I love to play different styles to develop my repertoire as much as possible. I grew up in Chula Vista, California. At a very early age I was around many musicians who always played Mexican folk songs during family get-togethers. I began learning to play guitar when I was 12. My parents saw that I took the instrument seriously, and as a result, signed me up for private lessons. I was able to learn the basics of blues, rock, classical, flamenco and jazz. Later on, I was led to the bass guitar by way of a failed high school guitar audition. The director of my school’s show choir had many other qualified candidates; however, thought the bass might suit my talents well. I then, took up bass and returned to my teacher for more lessons (he too studied both instruments for many years). At the age of 22, I began attending Musicians Institute to extend my bass repertoire. During my time there I gained proficiency in the following styles: blues (8 bar and 12 bar), funk, rock (hard, soft, and everything in between), Latin grooves (samba, bossa nova, songo, partido alto, etc), jazz, odd meter grooves (5/4, 7/4, etc.), R&B, and many variations of all of the above. In the past, I’ve played with bands and solo acts such as: Red Halo, Kavena, Curbside, Shaharoh, Hitchcock Holiday, Skylar Stonestreet, Chula Vista High School’s Main Attraction and Dream Girls. I am currently seeking work teaching lessons for guitar, bass, and beginning level piano/keyboard, out of my home studio. I’m also looking for bands and acts in search of a side man playing bass or rhythm guitar. In addition, I play for a band from San Diego that is scheduled to play several dates in the upcoming months. Please feel free to contact me for any of your upcoming gigs, instrument instruction scheduling, or for any other information you may have.
